If you refuse to accept the award
Soumitra Chatterjee twice refused to accept the Padma Shri award. In 2001, he also refused to accept the national award. He took the step in opposition to the jury’s position.
However, he later received the Padma Bhushan award in 2004 and in 2006 he also won the national award for ‘Poddochep’. In 2012, he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He was also awarded France’s highest civilian honor, the Legion d’Or, in 2013. He has also won many national and international awards.

Soumitra Chatterjee made an endless impression on the hearts of the audience with his debut film ‘Apur Sansar’. He has played the role of Apu in the film. His bearded look was very much liked by the audience. It is said that it reminded Roy of the young Tagore.

Satyajit Ray’s favorite actors were in his films like ‘Devi’ (1960), ‘Abhijan’ (1962), ‘Ariana Din Raat’ (1970), ‘Bari Baire’ (1984) and ‘Sakh Prasava’ (1990). The two had a three-decade relationship with Roy’s death in 1992.
Chatterjee has acted in more than 300 films, including 14 of Ray’s films. He excelled in parallel films as well as commercial films. Chatterjee once said of Ray, ‘… he had a great influence on me. I will say that he is my teacher. If he hadn’t, I wouldn’t be here. He also worked with elders like Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha and Tarun Majumdar.
Grandpa and Dad are introduced to acting
Soumitra Chatterjee was born in 1935 in Calcutta (now Calcutta). Chatterjee spent his early years in Krishnanagar in Nadia district, from where he received his schooling.
Soumitra was first introduced to the world of acting by his grandfather and the father of lawyers. Both were artists.
Bollywood has never taken a position
Despite many offers from Bollywood, he never went there because he believed it would end his freedom for literary work. Chatterjee, a favorite of the yogis, edited the magazine for more than two decades.
