New Delhi. The CBI has filed a case against a Mumbai-based short-lived TV artiste for allegedly running an international gang. It used to lure and blackmail minors on Instagram to get pornographic content from abroad and then sell it to their international customers. Officials said this on Sunday.

The official said the defendants contacted nearly a thousand minors aged 10-16 in the United States, Europe and South Asian countries by sharing photos via the social media app Instagram. He said the agency had recently searched the home of the accused, who claimed to be a junior artist in a TV serial, and his mobile phone and laptop were confiscated from there.

The official said a forensic analysis of his tools found online sexual harassment-related material that the accused later distributed to his international clients using WhatsApp and other platforms. Officials said the accused, a resident of Haridwar, used to lure minors into online relationships as movie stars and in the meantime provided them with pornographic pictures and videos which they used to trap them illegally. .

He said the accused used to chat with him on his WhatsApp number and ask him to do obscene acts during video calls which were shared via Instagram to his clients located in different countries. When attempted, the accused threatened to share his picture with family and friends. The investigating agency has filed a case against the accused under Pokso and Information Technology Act.
